How can chemistry teachers receive professional development in a busy and demanding workday? This question was the starting point for a project initiated by Ylva Hamnell-Pamment, chemistry educator and PhD in Educational Sciences, with support from the Sten K Johnson Foundation. The result is now here: a series of twelve short films that capture the essence of chemistry didactics. The films are published every Tuesday until April 15 and are available on YouTube.

“These video clips are intended as an alternative form of professional development, where different aspects of research in chemistry didactics are presented concisely in around seven minutes. The idea is to make it easier for chemistry teachers and teacher students to apply research when planning their lessons,” says Ylva Hamnell-Pamment.

The films cover topics such as lesson planning, language support, and chemistry models. How can chemistry teaching be planned to ensure both breadth and depth? What linguistic challenges do students face in chemistry, and how can teachers support them? And how can chemistry models be used effectively to enhance student understanding? These are just some of the questions answered in the series.

The video series on chemistry didactics is funded by the Sten K Johnson Foundation and produced in collaboration with the supplementary teacher education program at the Department of Educational Sciences at Lund University.
